The energy efficiency of adaptive street lighting is widely recognized, but its potential to enhance traffic efficiency, reduce environmental pollution and expand the electric vehicle charging network is less acknowledged. Retrofitting existing city lampposts with a diverse range of sensors (e.g. dimmable LED bulbs, air quality and noise sensors, EV\/e-bike chargers, traffic counters) transforms them into smart lighting poles, revolutionizing European urban spaces. When integrated in an overarching IoT network, these sensors enable dynamic brightness adjustments based on real-time weather and traffic data, leading to substantial energy savings. They also facilitate cost-efficient, large-scale real-time traffic and environmental monitoring, enabling data-driven policies and control measures (e.g. dynamic access pricing, parking enforcement); enhance traffic flow management, reduce noise and pollution (e.g. via info on traffic disruption and re-routing strategies); and expand the electric charging network (charging points at lampposts) for private and shared mobility (e-bikes, e-buses, and e-vans).<\/p>\n

RESONANCE promotes green and energy-efficient communities by harnessing the benefits of adaptive street lighting systems, using traffic and air quality\/noise sensors to improve environmental and traffic monitoring and management, retrofitting electric vehicle charging points to lampposts. These innovations will reduce energy consumption, maintenance costs and emissions while improving the accessibility, safety and liveability of European urban and peri-urban areas.<\/p>\n

RESONANCE brings together a consortium of partners from different regions (representing public institutions and sectoral agencies from Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania and Ukraine) who share knowledge and best practices in building energy-efficient communities through smart lighting technology, and improve professional capacity to design policies contributing to sustainability and climate goals.<\/p>\n
