Austria and Hungary build a joint hydrogen strategy

Home / News / Austria and Hungary build a joint hydrogen strategy

The South-Transdanubian Regional Innovation Agency (STRIA) is a project partner in the HySISI – Hydrogen Synergies for Interregional Systems Integration initiative, a 24-month Interreg VI-A Austria–Hungary project. HySISI aims to develop a cross-border hydrogen strategy and action plan, supporting climate adaptation and energy transition across the Austrian–Hungarian border region.

Project Partners

  • Wien Energie GmbH (AT) – Lead Partner
  • Enasco Cleantech Alliance Ltd. (HU)
  • WIVA P&G – Hydrogen Flagship Region Austria Power & Gas (AT)
  • South-Transdanubian Regional Innovation Agency (STRIA) (HU)
  • Zala County Self-Government (HU)

STRIA’s Role and Key Tasks

STRIA contributes significantly to several core work areas within the project:

  • Cross-border data collection and strategic analysis: assessing Austrian and Hungarian national climate and energy strategies with a focus on hydrogen technologies.
  • Stakeholder engagement: mobilising its strong regional network to involve local, regional and national actors.
  • Innovation and R&D insight: analysing the economic feasibility of hydrogen technologies in the South Transdanubia region.
  • Strengthening cooperation: facilitating collaboration between academic and industrial partners to advance cross-border energy innovation.

HySISI represents an important step towards establishing a hydrogen-based energy corridor, supporting long-term energy resilience and innovation capacity in the border region.

The HySISI project is implemented within the framework of the Interreg Austria–Hungary Cooperation Programme 2021–2027, co-financed by the European Union and supported by the Hungarian Government.
